MCA selects Sequena in two award categories

Sequena has been selected from a wide range of consulting companies, including the largest in the industry, to make the shortlist in two key public sector categories for the prestigious Management Consultancies Association (MCA) Awards 2011. The two categories are:

  • Change Management in the Public Sector
  • Operational Performance in the Public Sector

Both short-listings recognise the company’s work with the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), which provides independent oversight of the police complaints system in England and Wales.

When the IPCC needed a fundamental change in thinking and behaviour to make a radical change to its ways of working it asked Sequena, and partner Amtec, to work with its staff to draw up a solution that promises to deliver value on a sustainable basis.

Like many public sector organisations, the IPCC faced increasing demand for its services whilst pressure mounted on its budget. Demand was exceeding capacity, less than 50% of investigations were completing within target time and too few investigations were conducted completely independently of the police.

The Sequena team ran a series of innovative workshops in which staff at all levels were encouraged to challenge traditional policies, practices and ways of organising. As a result of the project, the IPCC now effectively manages demand and resources to conduct 40% more investigations fully independent of the police, has halved the investigations backlog and has a credible business plan with cost savings projected at 18% by 2013/14 - without additional costs. The project RoI was 2 months.

Sequena Director, Ian Crawford, who designed and led the project commented: “This project is an excellent example of a client-consultant team working together to deliver truly outstanding results. We’re delighted to have been short-listed in two categories that have so much resonance for public sector managers in today’s climate, with its increasing focus on reorganisation to deliver efficiency savings while keeping client staff onside.”

Run by the MCA and now in their 15th year, the awards recognise the value of consulting. Following interviews with consultants and their clients, the winners will be announced at the MCA Awards Dinner on 7 April 2011 in central London. Expert judges include Anna Mallet – Controller of Business Strategy, BBC; Sharon Spear - Deputy Director, Department for Work and Pensions; Peter Walmsley - Foreign and Commonwealth Office; Tony Travers – Director, London School of Economics; Paul Webster – Private Finance Unit, Department of Health; Duncan Angwin - Associate Professor of Strategic Management, Warwick Business School.
